“Nihon Kaji Sōshō Iga-no-kami Fujiwara Kanemichi” refers to both a prestigious lineage of swordsmiths—who stood at the pinnacle of the craft nationwide from the early Edo period through the end of the Edo era—and the title held by them. The Kanemichi who created this piece is the third generation, a grandson of the first. Around the sixth year of the Kyōhō era (1721), the character “惣” (sō) in the title “Kaji Sōshō” (Master Swordsmith) was changed to “宗” (sō), and from that point on, the signature was inscribed as “Nihon Kaji Sōshō.” This piece is accompanied by a “Tokubetsu Hozon” (Specially Preserved) certificate issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (NBTHK).

The *tsuba* (sword guard) also comes with a “Hozon” (Preserved) certificate from the same society. It is a *kiri-sukashi* (openwork paulownia design) *tsuba* crafted by Umetada Tachibana Muneyoshi. Muneyoshi belonged to the direct line of the Umetada family and was known by the name Kazumanosuke; he was active during the Kanbun (1662) and Enpō (1681) eras.
